Arrangements You Should Make Before Your Back Surgery

After your back surgery, at a place like Southwest Florida Neurosurgical Associates, you will likely be waiting impatiently for your full recovery. While recovery is not easy, there are a few things you should arrange to get prior to the surgery that will make the process easier.

Massage Therapy

After having back surgery, it is a good time to begin a massage therapy program. Massage therapy helps to facilitate healing by bringing blood and other nutrients to the area that is healing. This speeds up the healing process and helps to minimize pain.

A Good Pain Management Doctor

You will need a good pain management doctor. This doctor should work directly with your back surgeon so he or she can fully understand what you are going through.

A Friend Or Family Member With Free Time

If there is a friend or family member who will not be busy during a certain period, you may want to schedule your surgery during this period. Having someone to talk to you on the phone with or to visit and assist you throughout your recovery will not only make the process easier, but will also help you feel less lonely. Find someone who is willing to help with chores as well.

Silk Pajamas

Consider getting and wearing silk pajamas. These make it easier to slide in and out of bed. Silk pajamas will also make you feel more comfortable, which might help you sleep and more quickly recover from your surgery.

A Toilet Riser

Get a toilet riser so that it is easier to get on and off the toilet. You can have handles placed on the sides of the toilet or you could have a raised toilet seat that makes it easier to get on and off the toilet.

A Shower Chair

Shower chairs make it easier to take a shower since you will not have to stand. Measure the width of your shower and then go shopping for shower chairs until you find one that is comfortable. Also, the heat and steam from the hot shower might help alleviate the pain you experience.

A Back Brace

Your surgeon might recommend that you wear a back brace. Back braces are used to stabilize the spine. The back brace also limits movement in the lower back area. Just make sure to get the right size. Recovery can seem like a full-time job, but with the right tools, you'll be able to recover more quickly.
